An Unlikely Pairing

Wine and chocolate have been a posh pairing for a while now.  Believe me, I’ve been to my share of wine and chocolate pairings – a no brainer for someone who happens to adore both – but, I had an unlikely encounter the other day and it blew me away!  It was literally one of those “ah-ha” moments.

It happened when my husband and I were finishing our dinner wine with dessert.  Our wine, Tablao DO 2012, Navarra SP- a blend of 81% tempranillo, 9% garnacha, 8% merlot and 2% cabernet sauvignon.  Our dessert, a white chocolate bar smattered with cocoa nibs!  Crazy right – red wine and white chocolate?!  I’m sure red wine and white chocolate have been paired together somewhere but not on my path!  The Tablao had striking red fruits of cherry and raspberry with a hint of licorice and when tasted after the white chocolate, it completely mellowed out into a harmonious dance with the smooth chocolate and the bite of the nibs.

The description on the back of the Tablao bottle (great everyday wine for around $10 by the way) says “…a lively partner for appetizers, charcuterie and comfort food”……and by comfort food clearly they mean white chocolate!

    I truly enjoy Tablao and had it when I was in Navarra this past year. I would have never thought of pairing it with white chocolate, now I’m going to pick up another bottle and test this out myself :)
