Wine Wednesday!!! – The Stump Jump

by Jennifer Stinnett on February 24, 2010

In this economy, even the wine industry is feeling it! With that comes winery selling, big company buy-outs and a loss of the true artistry of wine. I know I have fun on this blog with all the cheap wine and fun catchy wine names – but there are also those family wines that are a great value for the price.

The Stump Jump
2008 Shiraz
imported by Old Bridge cellars

Old Bridge cellers are the people that import Australia’s artisan winery wines…. The Stump Jump by d’Arenberg Winery is one of those wineries. d’Arenberg Winery is run by the Osborn family …. no …. not ozzy … Chester Osburn. The family founded their winery in 1912 and we here in America are able to try their wines at great prices.

I purchased this wine for about $10-$11/bottle and what caught my attention was that it scored 90 points by Wine Spectator. I know. I fell for the point practice. It made me believe that it’s the best thing ever… but, in this case – for the price … it’s a great wine. Its a nice warm plum and spice taste. A nice wine to have with dinner for sure. The price, the point value — a nice one to bring to a friend’s house for dinner, movie night or talk time!

Wondering about the name “Stump Jump”? It refers to a plough that was used to clear the land …. it jumped over the gnarled roots of the eucalyptus trees. So — for $11 you can get a great wine from a family owned winery in Australia! I think that’s pretty special.

Cheers to Family Wines!

Thanks for the lovely comments, Jennifer. d’Arenberg are definitely one of Australia’s most inspiring and committed, if not more than a little wacky, winemaking families. It’s a pleasure to bring their wines into the US for folk like you to try. There are a few other offerings in the Stump Jump range you should try – a Grenache, Shiraz Mourvedre that’s fantastic among them – and the high end offerings, like the Dead Arm Shiraz, are stunning too. Enjoy exploring! Shae

Thoroughly intrigued. I’ll have to see if Woodmans or Metcalf’s carries it.
