Wine Wednesday – Bin it with Penfold’s!

by Jennifer Stinnett on January 13, 2010

I have to say … usually I stay away from Australian wines. Nothing against Australia … I just haven’t found one that really caught my attention. Until I saw the unpretentious label of Penfold’s.

Today’s Wine Wednesday’s Wine:
Penfold’s Bin 389
Cabernet Shiraz
South Autraila

At my first look at Penfold’s website, I knew I had been missing out on something. From their down to earth label to their quote when you first go to Penfold’s website, “To those who do things for love, not money” I knew this was my kind of wine! ….. and right I was….

In the 1800’s Dr. Chrisptopher Rawson Penfold a Dr. from france – brought to Adelaide, Australia some vines that he planted around his stone cottage. As his practice grew, he started to make port and sherry for his patients. (My kind of Doctor!) Mary, Dr. Penfold’s wife carried on his wine tradition after he passed on and brought the small beginnings to 107,000 gallons of wine… roughly 1/3 of all the wine stored in Australia at that time.

I love it … yet another women who has brought what was started by a family or husband to a thriving business. As I’ve gone through this blog/wine journey of mine, I am amazed at how many wineries have this type of same story … for us women … I think these are fantastic examples of encouragement for us!

Today, Penfold’s is continuing a great tradition. They have also started a great video series called Penfold Characters. Penfold’s hosts an interview with high profile individuals who share their stories of work, life and play.

Here is one of the videos from this series:

I think you’ll agree …. From their beginnings to today … I love a wine that brings and holds their beginning traditions/ tastes. Wondering about the “Bin” system? This was a naming system that the winery used to identify their different wines and originally the bins were often wines that were only for the company director’s. Feeling special now?

Here is the wine tasting video…

This is a wine you will want to splurge on … costing about $30/bottle. I know this is out of my typical price range … but every now and then, you need to treat yourself – and I would say this was a treat!

Cheers to Bins!
