Yes, it’s happened, I’ve been summoned for jury duty. The kicker of it is … I didn’t even make it for a “real” juror … I’m the runner-up juror. In other words if the winning titleholder is unable to fulfill their duties, I would then take on the titleholder title of “real juror”.
I was really excited about the fact I was selected. When I first got the notice, I started my research so I could be the best jury juror there ever was. Imagine my disappointment when I realized I was just a back up. I was all educated about Voir Dire, Jury nullification and then I aimlessly wondered over to Canada and I wondered what Canada’s jury process was.
So here we go … first of all…. I don’t know if Canada has a back-up juror thing … I bet they don’t … they’re good that way and want to make all people feel like a winner!
Then … I found out that a Juror in Milwaukee County can make $19/day for their contribution in their civic duties. What do Canadian jurors get paid?
It varies from province to province. In British Columbia, they receive $50 a day and the cost of meals. In Nova Scotia, they get $40 a day. In Ontario, they receive: zero for the first 10 days; $40 a day for the next 39 days; $100 a day after that. According to Dan Ferguson in The Globe and Mail.
Great. Their health care AND their jury judicial system is better ….
Plus … we have to buy our own lunch. BUT I did learn that I would get free admission to the Milwaukee Public Museum which is right next door for my lunch hour. So…. THAT rocks.
Parking? Well… I have to pay for that myself but they do provide free bus tickets. … at least I got that going for me.
I think this is going to be fun …. I really wish I was a real juror …. that would be a good blog post for sure…. except I can’t talk about the cases … to anyone … Canada rocks..
Cheers to Jury selections!
Jennifer
