Me, Chuck and 2 bucks!

a bad wine

Two buck Chuck! (2 buck chuck for you “number” people!) Haven’t heard of it? HA …. I HAVE! If you are in college, unemployed, like cheap wine, are a cheapscate or a cheap date but want to retain a little “yuppiness”? – here’s the wine review for you!

I met 2 buck chuck at a friend’s housewarming party a few years ago. Chuck showed up and everyone “ooooo’d and aaahhhh’d” that someone had brought the infamous 2 buck chuck as a gift. I thought they were joking. How was it possible that; A – a cheap wine was good and B – they thought it was ok to give cheap wine as a houswarming gift. Until I tried it… it wasn’t that bad…. not bad at all! That was the first time we met.

Now that I’ve made my way back home to Wisconsin … I had to stop the other night and pause at Trader Joe’s. If you are not familiar with Trader Joe’s – check out the link in my blog … it explains all. For those of you that do know of Trader Joe’s but don’t have one in your city. I’m sorry. Where can you buy 2-buck-chuck? The only place I know to buy this wine is at …. Trader Joe’s.

Two Buck Chuck has an interesting owner; Fred Franzia of the Bronco Winery. Fred Franzia sells the Charles Shaw label (get where the chuck comes from?) Now … the name Franzia … I had to wonder, especially from my Franzia box wine review … was THIS Fred Franzia any part of Franzia wines? … drum roll please …. the answer: No. So let’s move on.

Fred may not have the boxed wine world cornered – but he sure does have the under (and REALLY under) $10 wine world corner! Seriously, how can you sell a bottle of wine for $2? ($2.99 in WI) Not only sell a bottle of wine at that price – but ACTUAL wine, not flavored wine …. and then distribute … and market ….. and sell in stores who make money …. and …. ahhh….who the hell cares …. it’s a good $2.99 wine! And he has almost a cult like following …

Fred Franzia was just showcased in the May 18th issue of The New Yorker. Check out the link for some great background information on him. I have to admire his business savvy… not only that – he has been twice divorced. Really…. they put that in the article. Fred Franzia has had his share of controversy – but doesn’t every big name and business have that? Anyway, after reading some background on this obvious successful business man, I found my favorite quote which I will use to end this post.

From the PressDemocrat.com interview:

Referring to the 440 million-bottle milestone, Franzia said “That’s a lot of happy consumers. There’s no controversy there.”

Cheers to Chuck!
