Some of you come to my blog from twitter and I love interacting with everyone there. As always I meet a lot of great people. Recently I had the opportunity to meet Joe Woelfle of Blatz Liquor (@Blatzliquor). Joe introduced me to his cute shop, complete with a beer cave, set up in the old Blatz Beer Brewing company.
The Sunday I arrived there Joe had 3 of his suggestions waiting for me. Laplaya Merlot from Chile, The Velvet Devil Merlot from Washington and Decero a Malbec from Argentina. I thought, and thought and finally decided on …. all 3!
Tonight I want to share with you the first of the three: The Velvet Devil. Why did I pick this one first? C’mon….. how could I NOT with a name like The Velvet Devil!
The wine is bottled by Charles Smith Wines…. and one click over to their site will show you this isn’t your ordinary suffy set of wine makers! Their branded labels are simply done in black and white. Nothing more…. nothing less. This did at first create for me a sense of a wine bottled in the backyard ….. not really a bad thing. For me …. it has a screw top … no cork … remember – that’s my “Jennifer downer” — but just as the BITCH wine review from last year … if you have the words “devil” in your title … a screw cap is perfectly acceptable.
As for the taste … since I’m not a big Merlot fan .. I do have to say I like this. It’s a different taste to me. Mind you I am no expert – so take my suggestion for what it’s worth. It’s a full bodied wine and since the word velvet is on the label…. that comes to mind when I taste this. A big velvet taste of plums and for me a hint of cedar. At $12 a bottle — this is not a bad every day wine. I wouldn’t hesitate to bring this to the next party I attend. After all ….. bringing a wine named “The Velvet Devil” to a party will carry a conversation of it’s own I’m sure!
You can buy the wines directly from the site – but if you can’t wait and you live in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin area ….. stop in at Blatz Liquor at 1121 N Broadway … just under the Blatz Condos!
Cheers to Velvet Devils!
Jennifer
