My $6 Malbec Wine Review

by Jennifer Stinnett on January 14, 2009

C’mon …. how many wine blogs have you been to that showcase a $6 bottle of wine with flair!??!

Enter my latest purchase:
Santa Florentina
Malbec
2008
Famatina Valley (Argentina)

So this purchase was pushed on me (yeah.. like they twisted my wine-o arm to buy wine… ) by the cashier at the local Sam’s Club as I was checking out. He started to ring up my purchases and said “psst…. did you see this wine? Have you tried it?” First of all.. (silently thought) love the “psst..” when I’m standing on the other side of the counter and “no, what kind of wine is it?” He pulled off the display a bottle and said “one of my friends whose a big “wine snob” said he had this and was really surprised as to how good it was.” WELLL….. if his friend the “wine snob” said it was good??? SIGN ME UP! (do you feel the sarcasm at all??). So I grinned and when realizing it was a Malbec (something I’ve only recently tried previously), I said “great for $6, let’s put her in the bag.” (or in this case, box)

So tonight… I’m sipping the Melbac Santa Florentina from Sam’s club. I did let this air an hour since it’s young … but apparently that wasn’t long enough. It’s still a bit bitter to me. The bottle describes the wine as a “delicious glass of smooth juicy pleasure.” I don’t find that to be the case… or at least in my tasting experience. It’s a medium bodied wine with fruit aromas. It’s not an overpowering wine and actually … beside the bite, I have to agree with the “wine snob friend”… it’s pretty darn good, but I wouldn’t say it’s a fruit juice-y type wine.

This is bottled by La Riojana Coop. and imported by Biagi Gru & Estate Wines, LLC. While I cannot read anything off the La Riojana’s site… the pictures are great and I saw the word: orgánicas (love to see that word!) in there along with my guess that they’ve won some medals… (I’m an A1 reviewer huh? good thing no one’s paying me for this!)

Next time you’re at Sam’s Club, try the $6 Malbec, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Cheers to Argentina!
Jennifer

I can still see Madonna singing, “Don’t cry for me Argentina, that Malbec is too young to drink, but how can I refuse you?” Oh wait that’s now how the song went, oops!

Hey… this Malbec is a terrific little wine!! Young? OK, if that’s important to you. but also, very unpretentious. Sick of all those hoity toity descriptions of “hints of ripe fig, fragrance of kumquat” stuff? This is an honest, straightforward brew that needs no apologies, for age or anything else. I wish it were more available, can’t find it near me. I read the producer’s website (in Spanish,) but I think there is a link for English speakers. I also tried this vineyard’s white Torrontes, but that disappointed. Go for the Malbec!
