Success now has a number!

Really? Success has a number? Who knew!

Some of you know I work in Real Estate and have been for the last 10 years; not as an agent, but within relocation departments of some great companies. Within that time I’ve watched agents come into the business and watched agents leave. My insight to what makes a great agent comes from watching and learning.

There are so many aspects that make a person successful, that to go through them here … well… I should look for a publisher and just skip the post and directly go to book format. The one I want to focus on today is work and time.

There is a new book out from Malcolm Gladwell called Outliers: The Story of Success“. While I have not picked up this book yet … it’s creating quite a stir.

While being interviewed on the Early Show, Malcolm indicated that it takes 10,000 hours of work to become successful. Yep…. 10,000 hours. Tiger Woods, The Beatles, Beethovan, etc. What you don’t realize is that while you know the popularity and success of the previous people…. you dont’ see the hard work that was incorporated into that success. Tiger Woods …. while on top of his game …. still practices, still learns and does not stop because he reached “the top”.

Let’s breakdown that 10,000 hours.
2 hours a day for almost 14 years…… will bring you to 10,000 hours.
4 hours a day for almost 7 years ….. will bring you to 10,000 hours.

If I did my math right …do you see my point?

In Real Estate (or any industry), how much time do you spend learning more about your profession? 1 hour a day? 2 hours a day?
In Real Estate, how much time do you spend learning about new technologies such as blogging, social media, on-line networking? 1 hour a day? 2 hours a day?

If you are in real estate …. if you want to succeed ….. set aside time to get in the game. If you are an agent in 2009, you’ve already gotten this!

The agents that I’ve had the privledge of watching become successful…. are always looking for the next opportunity, the next way to generate leads for themselves and they are not solely dependant upon their broker ..or.. yes… I’m gonna say it… or PRINT media to provide their business.

Remember: 10,000 hours

Cheers!
Jennifer
