My Boxed Wine Review: The Wal-Mart of Wine?

by Jennifer Stinnett on December 18, 2008

UPDATE: So for my first in my vlog series, I re-reviewed Franzia wine AND addressed Jo’s comment below: Franzia Boxed Wine Review Video

I had the opportunity to meet Bill from Cuvee Corner.

Bill’s a fun wine guy and his wit with wine is even funnier. So funny in fact, that this Mr. Wine Pro suggested I review:

Franzia
House Wine Favorite
3 liter box
Chillable Red
www.Franzia.com

As Bill pointed out to me earlier — this red indicates on the box it is a “Table Wine with Natural Flavors”. What does that mean? So I went to the Franzia site in search of an answer …. boy did I find out some fascinating things!! Sit down, grab a cup and use that patented Winetap system on your box …. because this is actually very interesting…

First of all …. Franzia wine was initially created by a women … Teresa Franzia (women power — woo-hoo!) who, by the way, stood only 4’10″ tall and created this outstanding business. She continued to produce even during the prohibition by selling grapes to the winemakers back east. hmmm….. smart lady.

Say what you will and joke all you want regarding “wine in a box”….. but here are some fantastic figures from the company’s website:

===> All the Franzia wine sold world-wide in 2005 would fill 232 olympic – sized swimming pools. Can you imagine Michael Phelps breaking records in Franzia wine?!?! Just to put that in perspective that is 253,125 GALLONS of wine.

===> It would take a 747 Jet 10 hours to fly over all the wine stacked side by side that Franzia sold in one year. Wine on that thought for a bit…..

===> AND if you stacked all the 5L packages Franzia sold in 2005 they would be ……. hang on to your glasses and winetaps ….. they would be 1025 times TALLER then Mt. Everest. Which, by the way, took Hillary and Norgay 47 days to climb. — Mt. Everest, not the Franzia wine mountian.

Now… for my review of the wine … I think I will skip the Chillable red — while I asked about the “what does Table Wine with Natural Flavors” mean question, that will have to remain a question without an answer — apparently the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms has left this issue alone. Many claim that this cannot be considered a “wine” in light of it’s ingredients. I have to look at it this way — at only 9% alcohol in a product…. I think i’ll take this wine and use it with a splash of white soda for a nice summer BBQ! The less alcohol — the more enjoyable cups!

And finally my friends, as someone who is living in the land of the mighty business, Wal-Mart ….. Franzia clearly knows their stuff – dare I compare them as the Wal-mart of wine? hhhmmmm I’ll leave that as a retorical question. For all you wine drinkers out there that turn up your nose at the “Box O’ Wine” …. you must respect …. ‘cuz 232 Olympic pools of purchased wine can’t be wrong…..

Cheers to the box!

Pretty lame non review. Why waste the keystrokes if you weren’t going to follow through?

I agree with your facts, but, my last two boxes had bad valves.
I had to take the bag out of the boxes and hold the bag to open the
valve.
They are look like a chear valve/bag from China or India.

I have switshed to a different brand with a better valve.
