Book Review: White Men Can’t Hump …. by Todd Wooten

by Jennifer Stinnett on December 20, 2008

Soo…. did you like the title!? C’mon … admit it… I know there are a lot of marketing people out there that gave a little chuckle when you read it. I did.

I had the wonderful opportunity to be on an internet radio show with Todd Wooten, the author of the book “White Men Can’t Hump (as good as a black man)” some time back along with fellow blogger Eathan of idatewhite.com. Beside being charismatic and charming…. Todd is a very intuitive articulate individual. All this is evident by the research and work he put into his books.

Todd provided me his book to read and review… and I have to admit… I was procrastinating a bit… after all… why would I want to read something like this? So…this thanksgiving vacation (yes with my family) I was determined to read Todd’s work. Why did I pick my turkey day vacation to read this? Partly because, A – I had the time and B – I like to infuse a little controversy into family gatherings! And controversy I did stir! I plopped down on the couch one morning to start reading… inevitably everyone asked “what’cha readin’?” I relished watching the facial expressions as I told them the title. My grandfather got a scrunched up face and said “what!?!?!”…. to which I smiled and said, ” the author’s a former Marine Grandpa” Grandpa’s a Marine too and his reply was “oh…. it’s a good book then!” I love the loyalty that even surpasses generations within the Marines!

Todd’s life is certainly a testimate to his observations. Todd’s book is enlightening and he presented things in a way I had not looked at before. I found his honesty refreshing and to transend racial barriers. I did receive a historical education… although I’m 37, there are many things that escaped me on the realities of our history as it relates to racial issues. I have to admit, while reading Todd’s book … as a women there is an underlying element that is forgotten and that is of the women’s role in these issues. While I’m sure there is a book out there just for that, I found that America has a lot in her past of social injustices…. as we move forward with President Obama, I can only hope that we move forward into a more forgiving and accepting country. The key phrase that all of us need is; moving forward.

I would encourage people to pick up this book …. It is well worth the read and the research throughout history that Todd has provided is phenomenal. I couldn’t put the book down and felt I went through a range of emotions while reading; happiness, sorrow, humor, disgust…. it’s all there. While reading these pages – maybe you’ll also pick up on the emotions that even the author himself incorprates into his book…..

Happy Reading and Cheers Everyone!

After reading your review only, he is probably right. Western culture has been imbued for over 4000 years with myth and ignorance in human sexuality. The African culture has only been exposed to this for, say, the last 400. I would suggest that many of those in the African culture have a head start on us.
